Knowing and understanding the role of an Esthetician

While a lot of us frequent spas on a regular basis, we don't tend to have an idea of who an esthetician is. An esthetician is a certified skin care therapist who usually works in a spa, salon or medi-spa. He/she would have undergone professional training in cosmetic skin treatments, and would be qualified to provide a variety of face and body treatments, including facials, waxing and even specialty spa treatments. An esthetician is licensed to work only on the upper layers of the skin and not on the body. He/she would need to hold a valid practitioner's license for the state he/she is working in. An esthetician would also need to complete at least 600 hours of training in addition to passing a written test and a practical exam in order to qualify for the job.

What Estheticians are not

While an esthetician deals with skin conditions, he/she is not a medical doctor can cannot diagnose any skin condition, let alone prescribe any medications or treatments for the same. However, they can work along with doctors or dermatologists to offer services that complement the prescribed treatment.

How to find an esthetician

The hunt for a good esthetician starts by asking friends, family members and other known individuals for any leads. It is also preferable to choose an esthetician who runs his/her own day spa rather than one who works in a salon on a part time basis. Working with the same esthetician is also considered advisable as he/she would get used to your skin with time and help make useful suggestions for your skin care routine with time.
